Ascochyta leaf blight fungicide12/16/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This disease is less common but we still see it pop up during the same time as all the other diseases which runs from late June thru August. Use the same practices mentioned above to fix the problem. This type of grass is what you would find in any shade blend that you purchase. Fine fescue is common in lawns that are shady since it is considered a shade tolerant grass. Fescue is a type of grass that is much thinner than bluegrass, almost "needle like." Although fine fescue is found anywhere in most lawns. We see it mainly on lawns that are predominately filled with fine fescue. Typically it shows up in late June extending into late August. When looking closely you can actually see 'red hairs' coming out of the tips of the fine fescue leaf blades. We come across this disease quite often as well mainly on fescue lawns. We recommend a minimum of 3 fungicide applications per season pending on environmental conditions. Allow us to apply fungicide on a curative basis when it pops up, or to be safe we can start a preventative program beginning in June and applying every 21-31 days thru August to ensure we prevent it from showing up on your lawn. Sharpen your lawnmower blade most importantly! This pathogen enters the tip of the leaf blade and begins killing the tissue from the tip of the blade downward towards the crown of the plant.Raise mower height to 3"+ immediately and cut when dry if possible.Stop watering! You are actually making it worse when you water the lawn even though it looks like its' thirsty!.What to do for all diseases listed below: The pathogen can also spread from the tires of your lawn mower, your shoes, and even thru water particles.Ĭauses: Over watering, Dull mower blade, Cutting height too short Size of the areas are random, ranging from softball size to the entire lawn appearing dead or dormant. Often the grass looks "straw colored" or "bleached" in random areas as if the sprinklers are not running resembling drought or dormant looking grass throughout the lawn. Symptoms of Ascochyta blight look as though the grass is not receiving enough water. The blight comes on strong and spreads rapidly. It usually begins to manifest when there is a dry spell that was preceded by a wet period of time. This pathogen lives in the thatch layer of the grass plants. Thing is if there is any form of fungal resistance to the azoxy, plus the high disease pressure, plus it only being a preventative rate so if there is any fungus in the soil already that we do not see, plus a food source such as dead thatch, then those 4 things could contribute to a preventative not working as well.Common Turfgrass Diseases Ascochyta Leaf Blight: (most common disease we see) I did a preventative of azoxy and it lasted maybe 2 weeks. The preventative rate i dont even trust unless im putting it down with another fungicide group. Cannot remember the biology behind why that happens though. The grass will begin to look worse before it gets better during the meltout. There is also a "melting out phase" of the grass that can occur after a fungicide is put down. If im not mistaken the azoxystrobin is labeled for 30 days, but under certain conditions its only 21 days. Toss in some wet dew in the morning, and the fungus will spread. The planted trees can also show signs of fungus as well.īut right now disease pressure is high, and if there is even a little bit of fungus in the soil, the right conditions will set it off. The areas of the lawn where the soil is more compacted and or the roots are shallow, will be the areas that are affected first. I'd say if the dead leaves are curled up, then there heat stress and drought. ![]()
